Studio Culture

In Dundee we have a strong studio culture and a teaching programme which embeds the design studio at the heart of all teaching.

Students studying Architecture at the University of Dundee use their studio space as a base, sharing ideas and learning thorough working in small groups.

Studio Design Projects

Students use the studio as a base, sharing ideas and learning through working in small groups. At all levels the course is taught primarily through engagement with studio design projects, which develop student's design skills and test knowledge of taught courses (such as technology and humanities) through hands-on application.

Dedicated Studio Space

First year to fourth year students are based in the 'main' studio. Here students have the opportunity to create a space which reflects the study they are undertaking. Spaces therefore begin to take on the identity of the unit which occupies them. The nature of the studio space places first years next to fourth years, next to second years, next to third years - encouraging mutual support and peer learning.

MArch Year Five

In year five students move to separate unit studios opposite the main space. Here they have the opportunity to shape their spaces as appropriate to the study they undertake - the spaces begin to take on the identity of the unit which occupies them.

All studios, learning spaces, and library are wireless networked. The CAD suite (adjacent to the main studio) is equipped with 35 CAD workstations, large format plotters, printers and scanning equipment.
