Types of Gift

The form that your particular gift takes should reflect your specific needs and circumstances.

Keep in mind that in all cases - whether you prefer to give stocks, cash or personal property - your commitment can be directed to any area that is of particular interest to you and can be made over time.

University staff would be delighted to provide assistance when making gifts of a complicated nature although, as always, it is advisable to consult your own legal and financial advisors as well.

Whichever way you choose to support the University, your generosity is sincerely appreciated!

Cash

Making regular gifts via Direct Debit is by far the most convenient and efficient option for you and the University. This kind of donation reduces administrative costs, and by giving in this way, you will provide the University with an annual income and allow the University to plan ahead accordingly.

Shares

All donations of shares receive income tax relief of 100% of their market value as well as avoid capital gains taxes. Find out more about Gifts of Shares in the UK.

Property

Relief from income tax is now available for gifts of real property i.e. land and buildings to charities. This is in addition to the existing exemption from capital gains tax. The relief will work in a similar way to the existing relief for gifts of shares to charity. The donor will deduct the full market value of the property, (plus any incidental costs of disposal), less anything received in return, from his/her income for tax purposes. Donors will have to show that the charity has agreed to accept the gift of the property.

In Your Will

Leaving a legacy is an important way in which you can support the University's future. For further information download our legacy brochure or email Barbara Boyle. Did you know that by leaving a gift to the University in your will you will reduce the amount of inheritance due on your estate, and if you leave 10% of your estate to the University the inheritance tax rate will be reduced by 10% from 40% to 30%.

To mark the University's 50th anniversary we are launching the "Legacy 50 Club" to encourage you to leave a gift to the University in your will. By pledging a legacy to the University by 2017 you will be invited to join the Legacy 50 Club - created to thank everyone who chooses to support the University in this way. Members will be featured on a commemorative plaque, receive a pin badge, receive invitations to special events and receive an annual newsletter to show how legacy gifts are making a difference to the University. To make your pledge to the University please complete this simple form.

Corporate

Companies can make donations under Gift Aid by simply making a payment to the University. The company then deducts that amount in calculating its profits for corporation tax purposes for the accounting period in which the donation was made. In addition, companies making gifts of stock or real property can claim a deduction on profits for corporation tax as well as avoid tax on chargeable gains.
