Zoe Duthie graduated in 2009 with a BDes in Jewellery and Metal Design

I chose to study here not only because Duncan of Jordanstone has such a great reputation as an art college, but because I wanted to remain at home during my studies.
Upon graduating I started work within a jewellery repair workshop, however after exhibiting my work at my Degree Show and New Designers I was receiving lots of interest and opportunities relating to my own jewellery and so I took the leap into self employment. Since then I have been working full time as a jewellery designer creating work for shops and galleries and carrying out private commissions.
My degree has helped me to develop the skills I need to design and make professional jewellery. These skills form the backbone of my business.
The most enjoyable thing about it was being surrounded by creativity. It really opened my eyes to the world of art and design.

My best university experience was my final year degree show. It was a personal acheivement and I could see how far I had come in 4 years. It was nice to know that my hard work had paid off.
I did a weekend work placement with 'The Big Tent Festival' in Falkland as a children's events coordinator and then a 5 month placement in Perth as a jewellery workshop leader for adults with mental health problems during my 4th year.
My main advice would be to give everything a try! Join groups, make contacts, ask questions and explore every option of your course. Never again in your life will you have such freedom to learn new things. I wish I could go back and do it again knowing what I know now!
