Sana, from Pakistan, gained her O Levels from the Lahore Alma, and A levels from Lahore Grammar School in. She is currently studying for a BDes in Jewellery and Metal Work and hopes to graduate in 2012.
It was natural for me to choose Dundee after all the wonderful things I had heard about it from my sister who was already studying fine art here. She was all praise for the university, the course, the student life and the beautiful city itself. She said coming here was the best decision she ever made, and I am happy that I can say the same for myself now!

After graduating I will be open to all opportunities that come my way, and pursue whichever one suits me best at the time. At this moment it's hard to predict as it will all depend on how people respond to my work at the Degree show and at New Designers in London. I definitely intend on doing a Masters in Design as well but would prefer a few years off to gather some work experience before I do that.
I aspire to be a successful contemporary jeweller with an independent setup, employing other designers and makers under me. Although my main workshop might be based be Lahore, Pakistan, I do fully intend on exhibiting and selling internationally.
In first year you will have the opportunity to have a shot at every department and facility the Art school has to offer so definitely come with an open mind and try and make the most of it! Even though you may come with a certain course you want to study in mind, for instance Fine Art, you can still change your decision once you actually try out what all the other departments have to offer.
Also, come prepared for competition. Initially you may be overwhelmed by the quality of work produced by all your colleagues, but always look at it as inspiration and think of it as an opportunity to learn from them. Art school can be tough at times, but not if you are genuinely passionate about what you do.

The freedom! We are literally allowed to do anything and everything we want! We can interpret each project brief in our own unique way, which means you always get to do what you enjoy. The tutors encourage you to experiment, and push the boundaries of creativity and you get to learn a lot more than you think you would. The hours are flexible too, especially as you approach your final year, and even though most of it is self motivated, the tutors are always there to help out if you need it.
I really, honestly, can't choose the best experience I've had since coming to university, but without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life altogether have been these past three years in Dundee as a whole. Every single day I have spent here has been amazing and I will cherish all these memories forever.
In every way. Socially, you will befriend people who are from completely different cultural backgrounds and lifestyles. Academically, I found their style of teaching to be completely different, and certainly one I preferred. The weather, food and lifestyle are all going to be very different from what you are used to but that's what makes it all exciting. What's the point of going to study in a place that's the same as where you have lived all your life? I think Dundee and Pakistan are completely different in every aspect, which is a good thing as you get to experience and enjoy the best of both worlds!
Come with an open mind in terms of everything, you are here to learn, to meet new people, to have an experience different from what you are used to at home, so try and step out of your comfort zone, and even if it's hard in the beginning it will be completely worth it. Be open to new experiences and opportunities and make the most of your time here. However it's very important to stay determined and stay focused, you are here for a reason and don't forget that.
You have to remain positive throughout, yes it will be hard at times especially if you get homesick, but don't forget what you will get out of this will be way bigger then what you may be giving up for a few years.
Final advice would be: Party hard, but work harder!
