Sam Gray

Sam Gray, graduated with a BSc in Biology in 2012. He's responsible for the launch of Discover Radio, Dundee's student radio station.

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

Dundee was my final choice of universities - I couldn't find a 5th option to put on UCAS until I came across Dundee as being so high up in the Life Sciences league tables. I visited Dundee and loved the campus and the city from first sight. The entry to the city over the bridge was spectacular and set the scene for the rest of the day. I returned home and immediately added the university to my list of university applications.

What is the best thing about your course and why?

Life Sciences in Dundee has a fantastic reputation for research, it is a comfort to know that the academic teaching staff are at the forefront of their field.

What information do applicants need to know before starting this course?

The first year is a very smooth transition into university life and the course itself, giving you lots of opportunity to make yourself at home in halls and find your feet after moving from home. This means that you need not be worried too much about your prior knowledge of the field as the teaching will gently ease you in.

What has been your best learning experience to date and why?

I would say that my best learning experience whilst at university has been outside of the classrooms and lecture theatres. The skills that you learn in the extracurricular activities available at Dundee, I would say are of equal value to your degree itself and are an invaluable tool in enhancing the already world-class education you will receive here.

What has been your best university experience to date and why?

Setting up Discover Radio. There are so many opportunities to get involved with student societies/media in Dundee. After contacting the DUSA executive at the end of my first year, I was surprised how much there was to get involved in. I grasped this chance with both hands and put in a lot of effort to launch Dundee's new student radio station.

What was your experience of settling into life in Dundee when you first arrived?

I, along with most others I have encountered here at the University, was fortunate in being placed in a flat with people that I very quickly became fond of. This made the transition much easier on all of us.

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

Come and visit the campus! I really fell in love with Dundee when I first visited and think it has to be seen to be truly appreciated. The opportunity to be shown around by current students gives a great insight to life here.
