Saif El-Din, from Cairo, Egypt, graduated with a Masters by Research (MRes) in Life Sciences (Biochemical Characterization of PCTK1 Protein Kinase).
During my BSc Applied Biology in Germany, I had the chance to complete my final year at Dundee University through a partnership program between both Universities. There were several Universities in Scotland that I could have chosen from, but I was told that the Biomedical research at Dundee University is one of the best worldwide.
I am doing a Masters by Research, which means that there are no lectures, and so it is essentially one long lab project. What I like about my particular division (the MRC-Protein Phosphorylation Unit) is that the environment is very friendly and that I am really happy with my supervisor and lab members.
It is not an easy course, because you have to be very committed, and you may end up staying in the lab for long hours with little motivation and results (usually mainly in the first year), but you will enjoy it if you like doing research and are committed to this type of science. You also have to learn to study/read papers on your own, and not because of any particular exam or assignment deadline. This is not always an easy task in the beginning, but you have to know that no one will do your work for you, and that if you are continuously lazy and non-productive, you will not be allowed to continue.
I have been training Taekwondo since I was young, and have found a Taekwondo team here in Dundee which I have joined and am enjoying.
I am also a member of the Dundee University Islamic Society (DUIS), which was awarded most active Islamic Society several times compared to other Universities. There are nice events every while, including of course on Eid days, which include Lunch/Dinner at a restaurant, Bowling, etc. which I enjoyed and have made new friends from.
The College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee in known worldwide for its research in Biomedical Sciences, and my experience here, especially in the MRC-PPU, will give me a strong push forward towards my PhD and career in science.
I found the people quite helpful and friendly, and the transition was not difficult. However, the main thing that made things easier for me was the presence of a Mosque nearby which helped me to freely practice my religion and get to know new friends.
