Sabrina, from Pakistan, graduated with an MSc in Accounting & Finance with distinction in 2011 and is currently working at HSBC as a Market Data Administrator.
Before coming to the UK, I was employed by DIBL bank Pakistan. I had 4 years of work experience in the banking sector and my employers included DIBL, UBL-Ameen and First Women Bank. I had previously done a Bachelors in Computer Science. During my employment at DIBL I started an MBA (part time) at Iqra University and completed 17 courses, maintaining distinctions throughout the semesters. I always wanted to experience challenging work and an academic environment and because I realized that international exposure is a must for today's generation, I decided to move abroad for my Masters.
When I thought of studying abroad, I searched for a reputable university and place with a multicultural and peaceful living environment. A place where I would be able to utilize my knowledge and skills. Dundee University was one that was offering modules that appealed me. Dundee is also consistently rated as a friendly, safe place so you can be sure of a warm welcome.
Based on four years of banking experience with a strong academic record, I was quite confident of getting a (at least a part time) job in the UK during my studies. However, it took a bit longer than I expected - around 6 months to get a proper white collar job (part-time) at Dundee City Council. I started working in the Social Work department and after 4 months I applied for an internal vacancy in the Finance department.
Soon after completing my Masters at Dundee University, I started applying for a proper full time job in the private sector (that was more relevant to me) and finally I ended up getting an offer from HSBC for the post of Market Data Administrator.
It was not quite as easy as it looks, but although I got rejections, I never gave up, just struggled to identify my mistakes and weaknesses and consistently improved myself for the better.
