Rebecca Shearer

Rebecca, from Edinburgh, began her MA in American Studies and International Relations in 2010

Why did you choose to study at Dundee?

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

When I came to the University on a visit day I just felt right at home. Also, it is the only University in Scotland that offers a degree in 'American Studies'. The campus, location and social life also really appealed to me.

What is the best thing about your course and why?

The best thing is that I am learning about things that are genuinely interesting, meaning that I become interested in learning more about the subject and it encourages me to read around it.

Have you taken part in any student exchanges/work placements?

I am doing an internship with the Liberal Democrats next semester, and planning to take part in the Transatlantic Exchange after the summer.

What information do you think applicants need to know before starting this course?

Although American Studies doesn't really start until second year, any subjects taken in first year will definitely help enhance the skills required, such as essay-writing and analysing information. So, don't be put off by this!

What was your experience of settling into life in Dundee when you first arrived?

It was nerve-wrecking at first, as it is for everyone. But it's also very easy to settle in quickly - there are always people about and always stuff going on and things to do, so occupying myself was not a problem. I also like having my own stuff around me, and the student on-campus accommodation (I was in Heathfield!) feels very homely!

What has been your best university experience to date and why?

Being elected netball captain - it's something I've always wanted to do but never thought I would achieve.

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

All new things are difficult and scary at first, but ensure you're going to the right University for you and for the right reasons - it's your future!

Also, make yourself and your education your first priority, which means not going out with your friends when you have an important deadline the next day!
