Nicola Brown, from Dundee, graduated in 2011 with a degree in Accountancy and Finance.
Coming from Dundee orginally meant that I had a connection with the city. Knowing that it was a fun place to live especially for a student I couldn't wait to come here. Another reason for coming here was that Dundee University's campus is all in the one place unlike other universities who have more spread-out campuses. There was also a great atmosphere when I came for the visit days.
The course is both interesting and challenging and with the lecturers interested and enthusiastic about what they teach, the learning is more enjoyable.
I would recommend that students research what accountancy is about and make sure they are interested. You need to be willing to put in the hard work to come out with good grades and being interested in what you are doing makes it a lot easier as you enjoy what you are being taught.
You get to use software that is used by practising accountants. Having this experience gives you an idea of what you may do in the future and gives you the knowledge of the programs and how to use them.
Being an Accountancy student meant that I could become a part of the Accounting & Finance Society. I also joined the Dundee University Investment Club.
I became the ICAS (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland) Brand Ambassador for Dundee University in my 4th year. As an Accountancy student I plan to become a Chartered Accountant and having this opportunity meant I could gain more information on the qualification and get to know contacts in industry.
Coming to university at 16 was daunting however moving into halls made it that much easier. In halls you had flatmates that were in the same position as you so there was always someone to talk to about anything you were struggling with. Dundee is a really friendly city and a welcoming one, you feel at home here very quickly. You can have so much fun in Dundee you forget about any of your worries.
