Maziah Mohammad, from Malaysia, graduated in 1998 with an MSc in Concrete Technology, Construction and Project Management and in 2012 with a PhD in the same area.
Initially, I came to Dundee because I was awarded the prestigious British Council Scholarship via the Public Service Department of Malaysia in 1997. I am a practicing Civil Engineer and I was looking for a good course for my career. Dundee University offered an MSc in Concrete Technology, Construction and Project Management - which fitted what my employer was looking for. I graduated from this course in 1998.
I was later given another opportunity to pursue my PhD which I started locally. I requested to come to Dundee University for a short period because Dundee University is top in my subject matter - Foamed Concrete. In addition, it was a familiar environment.
The 3 months I spent here were an eye opener (again!). Settling in was extremely easy even though I am an obvious foreigner. I requested to continue my PhD at Dundee University, and this is where I finally completed it.
I made the right request and I'm happy my sponsor trusted my decision. If I'm in a position to send students to study in a foreign land, I'd send everyone to Dundee University.
Dundee is a great place to study; I enjoyed getting results and taking part in discussions with fellow students and my supervisor (Prof. Rod Jones). Everyone was very helpful in their own area. The Academic Achievement Unit helped me until I completed, and the technical team, working place and facilities were just right!
I'm now back in Malaysia and am attached to the Public Works Department there - the same department that I have been working in since 1985. I hope to do more research in my subject matter and gain greater experience in its application.
