Lynsey, from Dundee, graduated in 2011 with an LLB in Scots Law.
I went to lots of different open days and I had narrowed it down to two choices. I chose Dundee because the people seemed really friendly and welcoming and I felt like I would fit in well with campus life. The size and atmosphere of the law school was a winner for me as well. The academic staff seemed approachable and could give you lots of help when required. This combined with active societies and a great Students' Union made it the ideal choice for me.
I plan to work throughout the summer before returning to university for a postgraduate year (Diploma in Legal Practice).
Once I have completed my diploma year, I hope to acquire a legal traineeship for two years within a law firm to become fully qualified before furthering my experience in other areas.
The course is a lot of hard work and the first two years involve a lot of theory and that takes a lot of getting used to. It's very different from school and requires a great deal of commitment. I think the rewards of this course are more obviously seen when reaching your Honours study where you can choose your own subjects and can really enjoy and appreciate the subject.
I really enjoyed my Honours years and particularly writing my dissertation. I got to choose the subject and whilst it being an independent project, I received all the necessary support in writing it. There is a great sense of achievement upon finishing something you have been working on all year. The main thing I have enjoyed about my degree though is the friends I have made over the past four years. It's so valuable building strong relationships with those you study with throughout your studies and be able to share in all the challenges that are presented.
My best university experience has been my involvement with the music society. I have made so many friends and have really enjoyed performing with them as well. It's been great to take one of my hobbies from school and develop it and share it with other like minded students. I have loved being involved in the organisation of the society and have developed skills that I would not have otherwise gained.
I have been particularly involved with the music society. In my first two years I was involved with the swimming/waterpolo club.
Make the most of your time here. Strike a good balance between working hard and the social side of things. I would also say, don't be scared to be involved. It's so much easier to get involved right from the beginning, particularly with societies. Societies and clubs are where you make some of your best friends so it's important to grasp every opportunity.
