Louise Myles, originally from Arbroath, started a BSc in Computing Science in 2010.
As soon as I walked onto the campus at Dundee, I knew instantly that this was the university I wanted to go to. The staff were so friendly, enthusiastic and helpful and the facilities were fantastic. These were some of the many factors that set my decision in stone. I knew studying at this university for the next four years would be the best decision I could ever make. So far I don't regret a thing.
I don't think there is one thing in particular I like, since I really enjoy my whole course. Suprisingly enough I really enjoy my Mathematics module, but also find software development exciting since programming was all new to me. Constantly learning new things at university has my mouth watering for more and the fact that I'm finally studying something I have a passion for makes learning so much more fun.
Any prospective applicants should know that although going to University is a big step from high school, the first year is about getting all students onto the same level. So it doesn't matter whether you have, for example, done absolutely no programming at all because they teach it from scratch. I was in the predicament of having done no programming but everything turned out for the best as there were a lot of people in the same situation as me therefore I wasn't on my own.
Group work seems to dominate assignments in most modules right now. I used to take a back seat during high school group work and let someone else take charge. But at university I have tried to be the one taking charge and delegating. It's always hard working in groups but if you find what everyone's strengths and weaknesses are then you know who can do what best. This has been a successful approach as the work has been completed and to a high standard.
My best experience at university so far has to be meeting so many people. During Freshers' Week, I lost count of how many people I met, but it really helped me - I've already made such good friends at unviersity which really helped me settle in. I can see these friendships lasting a lifetime.
I've recently become class representative for my mathematics module, which wasn't something on the cards when I was thinking about my time at university. My mathematics teacher in high school is apparently very proud of this achievement due to the fact he helped me get through A-Levels Mathematics.
The day I moved into the Heathfield residence was one of the best days of my life. I instantly felt at home in the flat and made some amazing friends on that first day. Living in student residences was one of the best decisions I ever made, I think you miss out on a lot if you don't stay near campus. When my parents eventually left me on moving day, it was quite sad but I was ready to celebrate my independence.
University may be a place of learning but it's also where you will have some of the best times of your life. I don't think it would be a mistake to go to university as you are just giving yourself better opportunities in the world. Going to Dundee University will definitely get you where you want to go. Their main aim is for you to succeed in every way and therefore they are there every step of the way and you never feel alone and helpless.
