Lema Nail was born in Khartoum, Sudan and attended high school in Vienna, Austria. She is now studying for a degree in Architecture.
I came to Dundee for an interview for my course, Architecture. I fell in love with the city, and the student-feel community. The campus was a good size, and everything was within walking distance. But the main reason I chose this University was because I liked the Architecture course layout and the studios.
That you can be as creative as you want, and that you don't have any written exams! No extensive maths or physics is needed (like I thought when I was in high school). The course is very art based, with importance placed on hand-drawings as well as computer aided design. The model making workshop is amazing. Also, you go on exciting trips abroad and get a thorough outlook on architecture in different cities.
It isn't a walk in the park. You need to be fully committed, and are expected to be in the studios every day. Just make sure you get the work done for deadlines, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Don't go overboard spending in the art shop..ask one of the older year students what equipment you need, instead of buying blindly.
My best learning experience would be that I have become more confident speaking in public, selling my ideas. It feels very much like a business. You design your product, draw it up, present it, and defend it.
I used to play basketball...but had to stop with the demand of my course. But I joined the debate society in 1st year, which was interesting. I normally try and use the ISE Gym for workouts, which is great, and has a lot of good workout classes.
Architecture is a professional course, so normally you'd become an Architect. But you can branch out to other things like real-estate, product design, Landscape Architecture, Architecture journalism etc...
It was such a whirlwind. Everything was happening so fast. Friends emerged...and lots of partying was to be had. The city was easy to get adjusted to. Everything was so simple and straight forward.
Choose Dundee. Its simple and cheap living here. People are friendly. I've been here 4 years already and going on to my 5th year...and am still enjoying myself.
I moved to Dundee from Vienna. And was a bit scared at first, because even though I spoke perfect English, i was scared I wouldnt understand the scottish people. But you get used to the accent soon enough. Dont be shy...just get out there.
