Leah McDowell

Leah McDowell, from Belfast, graduated with a BA in Illustration in 2011.

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

The syllabus for the first year general course at Duncan of Jordanstone appealed to me the most. I hadn't heard great reviews of the art colleges in Northern Ireland so I knew I had to leave home.

What are your immediate plans after graduation?

To continue searching for a job/internships to further increase my employability.

What are your longer term career plans?

I intend to continue being a part of the British armed forces - either in the TA alongside another job, or if jobs continue to be sparse, in the Regular forces.

What was the most enjoyable thing about your degree and why?

The Duncan of Jordanstone Degree Show. Preparing for it has been stressful but I'm sure it will be rewarded on the opening night.

What was your best university experience and why?

Being a member of the University Officer Training Corps. It challenged me more than my degree ever did, both physically and mentally. It increased my employability, gave me real management and leadership experience and has boosted my confidence an incredible amount.

What sports activities or clubs/societies (if any) were you involved with?

The University Officer Training Corps, The Dundee Dance Society.

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

Think carefully about what degree you want to do. Consider your options after university - 4-7 years is a very long time to study 1 subject.
