Laura O'Brien

Laura O'Brien, from Galway, Ireland, began an MEng in Civil Engineering in 2008.

Why did you choose to study at Dundee?

Dundee has a great reputation for Civil Engineering - both within Scotland and the wider UK. I was eager to attend a university which would challenge me in every aspect of my degree. I came to visit the University on an individual visit day and got to meet lecturers and students who shared their experience of Dundee with me. I was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the students and felt the lecturers genuinely cared about the success of their students.

What is the best thing about your course and why?

Groupwork has been a really positive aspect of the course. It has allowed me to get to know other members of my class by working with them on different projects, in a similar way to the everyday working environment of a Civil Engineer.

What has been your best learning experience to date and why?

Survey Camp at the end of second year was a great experience. We were given the opportunity to get practical experience, team bonding and learning in a different environment. It was a really great experience and at the same time, we learnt a lot!

What sports activities or clubs/societies are you involved with?

I'm been involved with the Badminton club since coming to University last year. I've also joined Tennis and Squash this year and am really enjoying the experience of new sports! It's also a great way to meet friends and have a lot of fun.

What was your experience of settling into life in Dundee when you first arrived?

Coming to Dundee has been a very positive experience for me. As an older student returning to university, I was a little apprehensive however everyone is really friendly and welcoming. It made settling in very easy.  And as the sunniest city in Scotland, it's usually nice weather!
