Ines Foidl

Ines, from Austria, graduated in 2012 with an MA in History and International Relations

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

I basically knew nothing about Dundee but was told that the University was good and I really liked my course as it was offered as a joint degree from the outset. I came to one of the visit days, though and then it was decided. It was a beautiful day and everyone was super friendly, making me feel right at home from the very start.

What was the best thing about your course?

It was a bit of a culture shock to call your professors by their first names and not Dr so-and-so. But it was a welcome surprise as it just made me feel even more 'at home' here. My courses were really well taught and interesting. I never had any problems with anything.

What was your experience of settling into life in Dundee when you first arrived?

It was a bit weird, because at first Dundee seems quite small (even for someone coming from a tiny village) because you have everything (campus and city centre) right next to each other and in perfect walking distance. So it took some time and exploring (especially up the Law) to find out that Dundee was actually quite big.

How easy did you find it to settle into the UK as a whole? What was different if compared to your home country?

This may sound strange now but it wasn't difficult at all. Except for the water taps! After years of living in the UK I still don't understand the need for 2 taps!

During my time here, I also found work in a hotel, tending bar and waitressing.

What sports activities or clubs/societies (if any) are you involved with?

Lots. History Society all four years, Diplomats Society, to name just a few. There's basically a society for everything.

What has been your best university experience to date and why?

Finding two amazing friends that I will have in my life until I die.

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

University can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning but once you get into the swing of things and you get a good balance of a social, work and academic life going, nothing will stop you!
