Emmy Gates

Emmy Gates, from Dundee, graduated with a degree in Adult Nursing in 2008.

"I initially chose to study at Dundee because it was close to home. I'd also heard a lot of positive things about the University, especially about the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

When I arrived, I was happy to find that Dundee University are very 'pro freshers' - in other words, everybody makes you feel welcome and there are plenty of things to do especially in your first few weeks of uni life, as well as throughout the rest of your course.

One of the best things about my course, Adult Nursing, is that I get the both of best worlds; a combination of both academic and practical experience. The course is very 'hands on' and it's hard to get bored! It's also great being able to work in a variety of different areas with a variety of people. For me, it's been great being able to work with both registered nurses and also medical staff, and I've really felt that I've been able to make a difference to people's lives in so many ways.

The course can however be very demanding, as it's possible to be working full-time on a placement, but also have a great deal of course work to do. Applicants should try to have as much experience behind them as possible, as often you are thrown into the deep end when on placement.

Finally, a message to future students: enjoy your time here because it will be the best three years of your life!"
