Emily, from Newcastle Upon Tyne, graduated in 2011 with a degree in Dentistry (BDS)
I chose to study at Dundee because it's the best dental school in the country! The dental school is also on campus so I thought it would feel more like part of the University than some other places I visited. I enjoy outdoor sports too, so Dundee was ideal for that, although I haven't done quite as much as I had planned!
During my degree, I found it rewarding to treat patients who really appreciated the help, or who were very anxious, so I could take the time to help them overcome their fears. I did my elective in Malaysia, which was great (that's where I am in the photo!)
In general, I also welcomed the opportunity to build my own life and identity away from my family. I was involved in the Christian Union, Country Dancing and the Dental Students' Society.
Immediately after graduation, I will undertake a 2 year qualification course so I can be a NHS dentist. In the longer term, I hope to work in the community dental service, or maybe run my own practice - being my own boss sounds fun!
If you're thinking about studying dentistry here, you should know that it's hard work, there are lots of exams but it's worth it! The dental school is great, it feels like a real community, the course is interesting and challenging and you really do make a difference to people!
Work hard, play hard and enjoy your time at Dundee! It goes by really quickly. And don't give up when it's tough - everyone is finding it tough, they're just not showing it in the same way.
