Ciaran Wright

Ciaran graduated with an MSc in Human Anatomy and is currently working in nursing. He hoeps to pursue a PhD in Anatomy.

Following my completion of the MSc in Human Anatomy at Dundee I am currently working towards developing an academic career in the field. I originally studied nursing as an undergraduate, and this was where I first developed my interest in anatomy.

Studying at Dundee has given me an extensive and specialised knowledge base and developed my academic skills which will enable me to turn my interest into a career. Unlike any other institution in the UK, Dundee is unique in that it uses Thiel embalmed cadavers, which are much more lifelike that traditional formalin fixed cadavers. This gives students a much more accurate idea of the consistency of muscles and organs in real life and is particularly relevant for those undertaking careers in surgery or trauma.

Apart from anatomical dissection, students gain specialised knowledge in neuroanatomy, embryology, histology and relevant clinical topics, as well as writing a dissertation. There is a wide range of choice for essay topics so students can study areas they find interesting, and there is a large element of self directed study particularly in semesters two and three. This level of autonomy is good because it helps to prepare students for the future, as academics are required to plan their schedule and make their own decisions regarding what and how they investigate a particular topic.

I am currently still working in nursing, but I am planning on submitting parts my dissertation (which focussed on the variations of the liver) to several anatomical and surgical journals for publication. I am also planning to present posters at future Anatomical meetings. I am eventually going to pursue a PhD in Anatomy and my end goal is to work as a lecturer and researcher. Dundee has given me the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to achieve my goals.
