Charlotte Peart, from Durham, graduated with a degree in Medicine (MBChB) in 1996. She is now a full time partner at the Maryfield practice in Dundee.
I chose 5 cities to apply to study medicine based on their reputation. At the time Dundee offered entry into Medicine with slightly lower A level grades than the other cities. To be honest, I probably initially put down Dundee as a 'safety net'. However, as soon as I visited the city, on a bright, crisp wintery morning, and had my interview overlooking the gorgeous silvery Tay, I was sold!
I loved Dundee because it wasn't too big, was very friendly, offered a great Medical course, and was close to the 3 big cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, yet a lot less pretentious! I had 5 amazing years at Uni and have never regretted my decision. I wouldn't still be here now if I had.
I graduated in 1996, then did my Junior House jobs (defunct now!) on the medical and surgical wards at Ninewells. I also worked in the plastic surgery/urology wards at DRI (now demolished). I then entered into a medical rotation scheme, and spent a year in Accident and Emergency (where I met my nurse husband), and 6 months at Kings Cross Hospital doing Infectious diseases. I spent a further 6 months doing Obs and Gynae in Ninewells, and realised that I wanted to be a GP.
I was very lucky to get a GP registrar post at Maryfield Medical Centre, Stobswell in Dundee. I loved this job and passed my MRCGP following this.
I then was in the right situation to get a GP partnership in Arbroath for 2 years. Whilst I enjoyed this, I missed Dundee. When my old colleagues at Maryfield phoned and offered me a partnership there, I jumped at the chance! I have now been a full time partner at Maryfield (now relocated to Mains Loan, Dundee) for the past 10 years and know Dundee like the back of my hand. I love the city, the people, everything!
It gave me the opportunity to get a fantastic job in a city I love.
The friendliness of the people of Dundee, and the great student lifestyle that was on offer.
Going to Turkey with 40 of my fellow medical students for a week's holiday! Graduation was also an amazing experience, which was so much fun.
I joined the rowing club, but to be honest did not last too long after a freezing cold day out in St Andrews! I was a regular attender at the sports centre, and enjoyed regular fitness classes, as well as making the most of the gym facilities. The swimming pool was very good too.
Don't have any concerns about coming to Dundee. You will have lots of fun and come out with a great, well respected degree.
