Amer Alwarea, from Syria, graduated with an MSc in Advanced Sustainability of the Built Environment and is currently working towards a PhD in Architecture.
I chose the School of Architecture at the University of Dundee for its highly spoken reputation. It's one of the best schools of architecture in Scotland. On the other hand, Dundee city was also a good choice; a student- friendly city and cheap to live in when compared to other cities in the UK. The University also has good library facilities and services.
I ended up enjoying it so much that I decided to stay in Dundee University as a PhD student. I have also found that the tutors are really helpful and always ready to help.
What I can say about this course is that it is fixed enough to understand sustainability of the built environment and flexible enough to find your own way through it.
It gives you the chance to develop a personal view about sustainability, in a framework of up to date ideas and approaches, with the help of loads of external speakers and workshops.
What we learned is an interesting mix between architecture, urban design and development, through sustainability evaluation and principles.
One of the most enjoyable things about being at Dundee is the multicultural backgrounds of the students. Along with a number of the Scottish students, this has been helpful for me to improve my English. I enjoyed the good mix of home and international students, and the friendly city of Dundee.
If you are searching for a city that is big enough to enjoy and small enough not to be crowded, Dundee is your city. I have lived in different cities in the UK, Dundee appreciates students and facilitates everything to make it cheap and enjoyable to live in.
