Alyson Love comes from Hamilton. Graduated with a Nursing degree in 2012
I chose to study at Dundee because I wanted to be independent once I left school. Dundee offered me the independence I wanted but at the same time was also close to home.
When I first arrived, I was scared and felt a little homesick, however, after the first day of meeting the people I was living with and our first night out I felt a lot more settled and began to not want to go home at the weekends. Getting to know people in my class also helped to settle me into Dundee as others were feeling exactly the same as I was and we all helped each other enjoy ourselves.
Nights out with my class have always been good too as they have made it easier for us to get to know each other which then makes class that little bit more enjoyable.
My favourite thing about the course is the practical placements - these give me an opportunity to see a variety of different areas that I can work in once I graduate. We are out on placements for 3 month periods and then in our final year we get to do an elective placement in which we can decide where we want to go.
The placements allow me to gain confidence in talking to other members of staff and patients and dealing with situations that could occur. Nursing is really hands on. It's not just about handing out medication and filling out paper work, it requires a lot of hard work both in theory and practical and does take up a lot of your time.
