Alistair Martin, from Stirling, graduated in 2010 with a BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Working for a world wide defence electronics company on their graduate development programme. Having a broad skillset was very helpful in finding an international company as it means I can move jobs within the same company if I wish.
After visiting a University open day whilst still at school, I liked the facilities and campus in Dundee and felt that all of the staff were very welcoming and made you feel involved from the very beginning.
Meeting students from all walks of life who share a common passion for engineering and technology. The subjects offered were very diverse which allowed us as students to have a broad knowledge base - something that is essential for today's engineers.
Applicants should be prepared to take part in subjects such as mechanical engineering and physics as well as the electronics side. It is also advantageous if they have an awareness of renewable energy and environmental impact so they can get the most out of the course.
Having some form of project in each year, whether it was a small scale personal project or a larger scale group project. Being involved with students from all aspects of engineering was very beneficial as it developed numerous new skills.
Working on a summer research project in one of the labs which then led on to my honours project. This is something which I feel was a great opportunity as well as being very rewarding.
Do a subject you are passionate about - not only will you get the maximum benefit but it makes all of those library sessions that much easier!
