Alisha Mann

Alisha, from Aberdeen, is currently studying for an MEng in Civil Engineering Design and Management.

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

I applied to Dundee University on its reputation for being an excellent university and having a very good Civil Engineering department. After coming on a visiting day in January, I was so impressed that I accepted my offer for a place immediately! I love how Dundee is so central. Everything you need is within walking distance, I feel bad for my friends studying elsewhere who have to take buses and taxis everywhere!

What is the best thing about your course and why?

Civil Engineering is a very varied discipline so there are always different things to be learning about, I am finding the third year modules particularly interesting. My favourite experience so far has been surveying camp in second year. Yes, it rained and the days were long but it was a great way to bond with your course-mates as well as learning valuable skills!

What information do you think applicants need to know before starting this course?

It's hard work, but that's why its one of the top civil engineering institutions in the country!

What was your experience of settling into life in Dundee when you first arrived?

Moving into Heathfield Halls was a terrifying but exciting experience! Everyone was very friendly and in the same boat, so making friends wasn't a problem. Having a freshers pass is definitely a good idea so you can get socialising in the union!

What sports activities or clubs/societies are you involved with?

I have been involved with the trampolining club and I am currently involved with the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics society.

What has been your best university experience to date and why?

Freshers' week; you only get one first time, so you have to make the most of it!

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

Learn to cook some basic food and know how to work a washing machine!
