Ali Grema Mohammed

Ali, from Abuja, Nigeria, graduated in 2011 with an MSc in Energy Studies (Energy and the Environment).

Why did you choose to study at Dundee University?

It was a tough decision to make after being accepted at both the Universities of St Andrews and Warwick but I had to choose the University of Dundee because only its Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy offers a unique blend in Energy Studies and the Environment while also including energy economics, law, policy, environmental economics and sustainable development.

What are your plans after graduation?

Job hunting globally - I am flexible enough to work anywhere, although preferably the UAE, UK, Canada or Nigeria. In the longer term I hope to become an Environmental Specialist in energy related issues and hopefully create my own consultancy firm.

What information do you think applicants need to know before starting this course?

To note that it is not a core science base but a mixture of economics, technology, law and policy of the entire energy industry. It can also provide you with knowledge about a vast variety of other sectors in the energy industry including nuclear.

What was the most enjoyable thing about your degree and why?

The fact that the course incorporated both environmental and economic themes - valuation in the environment field is an area that is very debatable yet very relevant, especially now in the era of climate change and environmentalism.

What was your best university experience and why?

The amazing friends I made here, the vast knowledge that I am exposed to, and a new hobby in photography which I developed.

What sports activities or clubs/societies (if any) were you involved with?

Energy Institute, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Scottish Oil Club and Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Did you take part in any student exchanges/work placements?

I had a summer internship in London with Green Rhino Energy Ltd.

Do you have any advice for potential new students?

Open up to meet new people and try as much as possible to hang around less with people of the same nationality as you. Enjoy Scotland when in Dundee, as you can discover amazing places and sights such as the Highlands, castles and historical sites.

How did you find settling into life in the UK?

It was easy, as I was expecting worse weather condition. All in all, i was impressed with the level of acceptance and the environment.
