Alan Keane is a mature student from Ireland. Married with two sons, he graduated with an MArch (Master of Architecture) in 2010.
I chose to attend Dundee University to study architecture because of the studio culture. It is not to be underestimated what a significant advantage such an environment is to a student's development. The process of osmosis, learning from your peers, broadens your horizons so much by the exchange of knowledge and skills.
From the time I realised what architecture was, I knew it was what I wanted to do. For me it is a vocation, and at university I realised that as students and graduates we would be part of something much greater; an astounding intellectual and built inheritance to which a university education is the key.
Applicants need to know that architecture asks a great deal of commitment. It is hard work but very rewarding because of it. Your time in university offers you the opportunity to really explore your ideas and expand your potential, and you must take best advantage of it.
My best learning experience at university came from a close working relationship with some very engaging tutors. They were inspiring and challenging in their tutelage, and always encouraging.
My best university experience was graduation. Architecture is a long course and to endure it to the end came with a real sense of achievement, one I shared with some excellent friends made along the way.
Traditionally architecture students will take a year work experience during their education. I was incredibly lucky to work for Graeme Massie Architects in Edinburgh. Graeme was my tutor in 3rd Year and my time there was really very inspiring.
Be inspired. Architecture is an amazing subject.
Coming from Ireland, the culture was very easy to adapt to. In my time in Dundee I met many international students who really enjoyed Scotland. It is a beautiful country with much to offer.
