Adam, from Kirkcaldy, graduated in 1999 with a BSc in Computer Science. He now works as a senior software developer.
Dundee is a great place for socialising and it wasn't a million miles from home if I needed to go back there. Oh yeah and the computing department really impressed me during the open day.
Worked for BT in their R&D facility in Ipswich - was put on their graduate program and learned all about network engineering and then software engineering. Then moved to Northern Ireland in 2002 and now work as a senior software developer (.NET) for a global manufacturing company (Glen Dimplex Group).
Having a computing degree has been essential for applying and getting jobs in the IT industry. Many of the core principles of software engineering I learned in my degree course still apply today!
I enjoy writing software so all the coursework which involved writing programs I loved. The computing department had 24 hour access too which was essential if you didn't have access to a PC at home. Everyone in the department was so friendly and approachable that there was always a good vibe around the place.
Meeting lots of people from all walks of life - I've made friendships which will last a lifetime. One of the people I met I ended up marrying so I guess you can't beat that...
Played football in a student league (was sponsored by the Freelance and Firkin so trip to bar afterwards was compulsory) - was also a member of the Maths and Computing Society (MACS). Had some memorable nights out with both groups!
Between 3rd and 4th years worked for the NHS in the Asthma Research Unit at Ninewells Hospital. Developed software to allow GPs to submit data on their asthma patients which was then collated by the team and used to provide statistical analysis.
Work hard to get the best degree result you can but don't forget to enjoy yourself too as the time goes quickly. Get out and explore the city and its surroundings and get involved in societies and events as they make the whole experience a million times better.
