Pakistan

These pages are specifically designed for those students coming to Dundee from Pakistan.

We have been welcoming students from Pakistan to Dundee for many years, and currently have around 60 Pakistani nationals studying at the University.

Why Dundee?

Come and join our student population and study for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree here in Scotland, at a university which has been ranked #1 for student experience. We have many unique offerings available and are ranked as one of the top 200 institutions in the world.

We offer a very high standard of education, and career prospects for our graduates are amongst the best in the UK.

Studying for a degree in Scotland

The Scottish education system is different from the system in Pakistan and it is important that you understand some of those differences before you make your decision to come and study here at Dundee.

For undergraduates

The Scottish education system dates back as far as 1413, and its educational degree model has been adopted by the USA and France. Undergraduate degrees are traditionally 4 years in duration, although it is possible to gain advanced entry with good grades (see our entry requirements for more information).

The methods of teaching that we use in Dundee differ to those of Pakistan. In Pakistan, you would be given specific instructions and guidelines on your projects and examinations. In Dundee, you are expected to approach your studies with independence and entrepreneurship. Each student will have a course adviser for guidance, however, you are expected to conduct your coursework and studies with discipline and self-motivation.

Year 1:  Successful completion of Higher Secondary Certificate/Intermediate with 80% overall (with 80% or above in key subjects) OR 1st year of a Bachelor of Arts or Commerce (Pass Degree).

Students with international school leaving qualifications can find detailed entry requirements on the individual course page.

Year 2: Direct entry to 2nd year is often possible for certain courses, based on A-Level or IB grades. Or if the student meets the Level 1 requirements and has undertaken further studies towards a relevant University level qualification at a recognised institution. Check the specific requirements on the course page.

For graduate students

Postgraduate Masters degrees are 12 months in duration at the University of Dundee compared to 24 months in other countries. They tend to be very focused and you will leave with a specialisation that can often give you an edge in a particular field. Generally the courses start in September, although some also have January start dates.

The advantage to the 12 month courses is that you will save both time and money, and begin your career sooner.

For taught postgraduate degrees, the methods of teaching that we use in Dundee differ to those of Pakistan.

A Masters level qualification from a good university will normally be required. Evidence of some research experience (for example through a Masters Degree project) is expected. Transcripts of all previous degree-level studies must accompany the application.

Scottish life and culture

While at Dundee you can immerse yourself in Scottish culture (there's more to it than just tartan and shortbread!) and explore the scenic beauty of Scotland. Mountains, lochs and glens are all within easy reach, and the rest of the UK is also highly accessible, even without a car. If that's not enough, you'll only be a short flight away from mainland Europe too.

"International students who might be thinking of coming to Dundee should realize the limitless possibilities they can explore while being here ... there is so much to do, learn, explore and experience in Dundee and Scotland at large that it's absolutely amazing."

Student Societies

We have a thriving International Student Society which has members from over 100 countries world-wide. They organise trips and tours, arrange social events, and work in conjunction with our international support service to make sure your time at Dundee runs smoothly.

Recently, they organised a showing of the historic semi-final match of the Cricket World Cup 2011 (India vs Pakistan) at the Union, as well as the Colours of Pakistan Festival.

Other societies that may be of particular interest to students from Pakistan are the Pakistani Society (part of the Asiana Student Network) and the Bhangra Society.

"I enjoyed living with people from Scotland, and a few other countries. It gives you a different out look on things. The diversity at the University is high and it is nice to get to know a lot of other people. The Students Union is also fun and a great way to meet new people. The area around the campus seems very safe and enjoyable."
International Student Barometer, 2009
