Mexico

These pages are specifically designed for those students coming to Dundee from Mexico.

The University of Dundee is home to nearly 18,000 students, with approximately 20% coming from overseas. We very much welcome applications from Mexican nationals and have an active alumni group in Mexico for our former students.

Why Dundee?

Come and join our student population and study for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree here in Scotland, at a university which has been ranked #1 for student experience. We have many unique offerings available and are ranked as one of the top 200 institutions in the world. Our staff-student ratio of 6:1 ensures a high level of interaction between staff and students, and career prospects for our graduates are amongst the best in the UK.

Coming to the University of Dundee is an opportunity I'm glad I took. Before coming here the idea of living in the UK by myself was a little bit intimidating, but once I got here, it was surprisingly easy to settle down. It's a very safe city and people here in Dundee are really friendly. A lot of them are students, so making new friends is not difficult at all. Voted one of UK's best, the Student Union is a place where you'll find yourself partying often. There's also a great variety of different student clubs and societies you can join and even special events for international students, making this university very student-friendly.
Oscar Lozano, MSc Design Ethnography, 2011

English Support Programme

We understand that moving overseas and living and studying in a country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. That's why we offer our English support programme, to help you to increase your confidence, skills and knowledge of English.

Classes are free and there is no formal assessment. Instead, our supportive tutors offer feedback on your progress throughout. Joining the programme is a great way to improve your English and to make new friends at the same time.

Scottish life and culture

While at Dundee you can immerse yourself in Scottish culture (there's more to it than just tartan and shortbread!) and explore the scenic beauty of Scotland. Mountains, lochs and glens are all within easy reach, and the rest of the UK is also highly accessible, even without a car. If that's not enough, you'll only be a short flight away from mainland Europe too.

Student Societies

We have a thriving International Student Society which has members from over 100 countries world-wide. They organise trips and tours, arrange social events, and work in conjunction with our international support service to make sure your time at Dundee runs smoothly.

Our International Support Office also organises events for the international community.

You'll be able to find friends to celebrate Scottish holidays and events with - such as Hogmanay (New Year), Burns Night, and St Andrew's Day, and there is also a community in Scotland that celebrates Mexican Independence Day.

"What I most enjoyed was the international experience and the face that the university promoted Scottish culture, ceilidhs, and celebrations. I enjoyed taking walks, even at night. I love the landscape of Scotland. The fact that you are in Dundee gives the ability to explore and to go to other cities. Dundee is quite cheap. I enjoyed watching the sunset there. I think Scottish people are very open and know about the world"
Emma Fabiola Navarro Montaño, MSc in Media Art and Imaging, 2008.

Fabiola now teaches at a state university in Mexico and engages in research as well.

Studying and living abroad will also help you to stand out from other candidates in an increasingly crowded job market. You'll gain first-hand international experience, and be able to draw upon your time in the UK to demonstrate skills in adaptability, self-confidence and problem solving - all of which employers value.

The more independent approach to learning that you'll find here will also help you to develop critical thinking, self-discipline and the analytical skills that are sought after by employers.

"The University of Dundee offers a great deal of very specialised programs you won't find anywhere else. That, I think, is their biggest asset. Overall, I've had a great year so far here in Dundee. It's a decision I have never regretted."
Oscar Lozano, MSc Design Ethnography

"The community of the international students, I like that a lot. The experience and background of the professors is what gave me insight into the oil industry, it allowed me to see wider than Mexico. Talking to people from Russia, Kazakhstan, India, China, Libya, gave me a lot of knowledge. I had a chance change to speak to students from Latin America and Europe as well - this was very enriching for me. When I returned to Mexico, I felt I gained something from Dundee, from both the students and the professors and that meant a lot - it was fantastic."
M.C. Jesús Gallardo Soto, MSc Energy Studies, Oil and Gas, 2005.

Jesús is now the Superintendente de Tecnologías for PEMEX and has a background in engineering.
