We are pleased to welcome students from Hong Kong to Dundee. At present, we have about ten students from Hong, but this number is growing, and we also have two active alumni groups in Hong Kong for our former students.

Why Dundee?

Studying for a degree in Scotland

It is important that you understand a little about the Scottish education system before you make your decision to come and study here at Dundee:

For undergraduates

The Scottish education system dates back as far as 1413 and its educational degree model has been adopted by the USA and France. Undergraduate degrees are typically 4 years in duration, although it is possible to gain advanced entry with good grades (see our entry requirements for more information).

Students begin to study within their chosen subject area during their first year. This means that you apply for a specific course of study. You can switch your course of study up to year two, but once you enter year three, you must continue with your chosen course of study. For some students, this is one of the key advantages of studying in the UK.

Unless you are studying for a professional degree, such as law, accountancy or medicine, you will probably be taking either a BSc or an MA. The following links explain the structure for these degrees:

At Dundee, we also offer more flexibility than other UK universities, by offering joint degree programmes.

Our academic years run from September to May, with two teaching semesters. Exams for most undergraduate courses are held in December and April/May.

Studying

In Dundee, you will be expected to approach your studies with a level of independence, self-motivation and critical thinking. For some subjects, particularly those within the MA programme, the time spent in lectures and tutorials might seem less than you are used to. However, the empty spaces on your timetable are not simply free time - you will be carrying out private study. You might find this is different to the way you have been taught previously, but it will help you to develop skills which are highly sought-after by employers.

For postgraduate students

In the UK, the term 'postgraduate' refers to Masters and PhD level courses - you may call these 'graduate' level in your home country.

Postgraduate Masters degrees are 12 months in duration at the University of Dundee. They tend to be very focused and you will leave with a specialisation that can often give you an edge in a particular field. Generally the courses start in September, although some also have January start dates.

The advantage to the 12 month courses is that you will save both time and money, and begin your career sooner.

The normal period of study - on a full-time basis - for completing a Doctorate (normally a PhD) is three years. The British PhD does not have a substantial taught element, and is based on original research.

English Support Programme

We understand that moving overseas and living and studying in a country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. That's why we offer our English support programme, to help you to increase your confidence, skills and knowledge of English.

Classes are free and there is no formal assessment. Instead, our supportive tutors offer feedback on your progress throughout. Joining the programme is a great way to improve your English and to make new friends at the same time.

Scottish life and culture

While at Dundee you can immerse yourself in Scottish culture (there's more to it than just tartan and shortbread!) and explore the scenic beauty of Scotland. Mountains, lochs and glens are all within easy reach, and the rest of the UK is also highly accessible, even without a car. If that's not enough, you'll only be a short flight away from mainland Europe too.

Student Societies

We have a thriving International Student Society which has members from over 100 countries world-wide. They organise trips and tours, arrange social events, and work in conjunction with our international support service to make sure your time at Dundee runs smoothly.

You'll easily find friends to celebrate Scottish holidays and events with - such as Hogmanay (New Year), Burns Night, and St Andrew's Day.

Our International Support Office also organises events for the international community.

We even have a Hong Kong Society, which organises various events within Dundee every year.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements

For entry to all our programmes you will need to demonstrate that your qualifications meet the University of Dundee entrance requirements. These are general guidelines only, and exact requirements will vary on an individual basis, and from course to course. The information below is based on you taking your exams under your country's national education system. If this is not the case, please refer to the entry requirements for the relevant country.

For undergraduate courses: if you have taken international school leaving qualifications such as A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB), the entry requirements are detailed on the individual undergraduate course pages.

For some of our postgraduate programmes there may be additional non-academic entrance requirements such as relevant work experience. These are detailed on the individual postgraduate course pages.

Undergraduate - Years 1 and 2

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)

Students with HKDSE qualifications should pass all four core subjects, and take the relevant subjects as specified on entry requirements in Degree programme pages. You should also meet the equivalent requirement to GCE A level as below. Good students who have fulfilled the entry requirements may be admitted direct into the 2nd year.

For English language we will accept the HKDSE English at 3 or above. Exceptions are Law, Medicine and Dentistry which require minimum 5 or above.

Hong Kong Advanced Level Certificate (HKALE)

This is considered comparable to the overall GCE A Level or Scottish Advanced Higher standard. However the level of attainment required for the award of a given grade is considered to be higher in the HKALE. Thus, a grade E in a HKALE would be comparable to a grade C in a qualification taken in the UK. Candidates should be taking 3 subjects at A-Level (2 AS-Levels may substituted for one A-Level). Good students who have fulfilled the entry requirements may be admitted direct into the 2nd year.

Undergraduate - Years 2 and 3

Associate Degree and Diploma students are encouraged to make an application. Students will be considered for year 2 entry but students who have achieved high grades will be considered for entry to year 3 (where the programme rules allow).

Postgraduate - taught

Applicants who hold a Bachelor degree may be considered for taught postgraduate study. You must submit your degree transcripts.

Postgraduate - research

A Masters level qualification from a good university will normally be required. Evidence of some research experience (for example through a Masters Degree project) is expected. Transcripts of all previous degree-level studies must accompany the application.

English language requirements

For all our programmes you will also need to satisfy the University's English language requirements.

Living Costs

Dundee is ranked as one of the most affordable places for students to live in the UK, so you get a high value of education and your cost of living is affordable.
Students are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week with their student visa.
As a student in Scotland, you have access to the National Health Service, so you do not have to pay for health insurance while studying at Dundee.
We offer a variety of accommodation, both on and off campus.
