China

These pages are specifically designed for those students coming to Dundee from China.

We are pleased to welcome students from China to Dundee and at present there are almost 300 Chinese students studying at the University. We also have strong links and partnerships with several Chinese institutions.

Why Dundee?

Come and join our student population and study for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree here in Scotland, at one of the top 200 institutions in the world. We offer a very high standard of education, and career prospects for our graduates are amongst the best in the UK.

Studying for a degree in Scotland

The Scottish education system is different from the Chinese system and it is important that you understand some of those differences before you make your decision to come and study here at Dundee.

For undergraduates

The Scottish education system dates back as far as 1413 and its educational degree model has been adopted by the USA and France. Undergraduate Degrees are traditionally 4 years in duration, although it is possible to gain advanced entry with good grades (see our entry requirements for more information).

The methods of teaching differ to China. In China, students are given specific instructions and guidelines on their projects and examinations. In Dundee, students are expected to approach their studies with independence, and entrepreneurship, using their own thought processes on how to progress and be successful in their studies. Each student will have a course adviser for guidance, however they are expected to conduct their coursework and studies with discipline and self motivation.

For graduate students

The Scottish education system dates back as far as 1413 and its educational degree model has been adopted by the USA and France.

Postgraduate Masters degrees are 12 months in duration at University of Dundee compared to 24-36 months in China. Generally the courses start in September, although some also have January start dates.

Information in Chinese

We have a Chinese blog, written by staff in our China Office, which will give you lots of useful information about the University in your own language.

English Support Programme

We understand that moving overseas and living and studying in a country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. That's why we offer our English support programme, to help you to increase your confidence, skills and knowledge of English.

Classes are free and there is no formal assessment. Instead, our supportive tutors offer feedback on your progress throughout. Joining the programme is a great way to improve your English and to make new friends at the same time.

Scottish life and culture

While at Dundee you can immerse yourself in Scottish culture (there's more to it than just tartan and shortbread!) and explore the scenic beauty of Scotland. Mountains, lochs and glens are all within easy reach, and the rest of the UK is also highly accessible, even without a car. If that's not enough, you'll only be a short flight away from mainland Europe too.

"I enjoyed living with people from Scotland, and a few other countries. It gives you a different out look on things. The diversity at the University is high and it is nice to get to know a lot of other people. The Students Union is also fun and a great way to meet new people. The area around the campus seems very safe and enjoyable."
International Student Barometer, 2009

Student Societies

We have a thriving International Student Society which has members from over 100 countries world-wide. They organise trips and tours, arrange social events, and work in conjunction with our international support service to make sure your time at Dundee runs smoothly.

You'll easily find friends to celebrate Scottish holidays and events with - such as Hogmanay (New Year), Burns Night, and St Andrew's Day.

Our International Support Office also organises events for the international community.

The information below is based on you taking your exams under your country's national education system. If this is not the case, please refer to the entry requirements for the relevant country.

For undergraduate courses: if you have taken international school leaving qualifications such as A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB), the entry requirements are detailed on the individual undergraduate course pages.

For some of our postgraduate programmes there may be additional non-academic entrance requirements such as relevant work experience. These are detailed on the individual postgraduate course pages.

Undergraduate - Year 1

Students with excellent results (75%+) from key schools, and those who have achieved good results in the Chinese National University entrance exams, may be admitted to degree courses.

Undergraduate - Year 2

Candidates will be considered on a case by case basis.

Undergraduate - Year 3

A three-year Chinese university diploma would normally allow entry into the 3rd year of a related degree course.
