We understand that moving overseas and living and studying in a country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. That's why we offer our English support programme, to help you to increase your confidence, skills and knowledge of English.

Classes are free and there is no formal assessment. Instead, our supportive tutors offer feedback on your progress throughout. Joining the programme is a great way to improve your English and to make new friends at the same time.

Life in Dundee

While at Dundee you can immerse yourself in Scottish culture (there's more to it than just tartan and shortbread!) and explore the scenic beauty of Scotland. Mountains, lochs and glens are all within easy reach, and the rest of the UK is also highly accessible, even without a car.

Settling in was fairly easy. There was always something happening on campus - definitely arrive early to experience Fresher's Week. I enjoyed living with 5 other students in first year, and the accommodation was really nice and brand new. The city centre is close as well, and has everything you need, filled with stores and restaurants.

Student Societies

We have a thriving International Student Society which has members from over 100 countries world-wide. They organise trips and tours, arrange social events, and work in conjunction with our international support service to make sure your time at Dundee runs smoothly.

One of their most popular events is the Welcome Party, which gives you a taste of Scotland (with food such as haggis, neeps and tatties) and introduces you to some traditional Scottish entertainment, including Burns poetry, bagpipes and Scottish country dancing to the live ceilidh band.
Take a look at some photos from the 2011 welcome party.

The University's new Diplomats@Dundee society is also proving propular with our European students.

"I would especially encourage students from my country to apply [to Dundee], because I think it's a great opportunity to study abroad and improve English. The staff at the university have been very helpful and the way lecturers treat students is really great, because they care about students and they show interest in students' progress. Apart from that Dundee is a really nice place to study and students from abroad can experience other cultures."

Living in the UK is a continual lesson of independence, which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Living away from home does include taking care of bills and dirty washing, but it also gives me the opportunity to enjoy some freedom away from the prying eyes of my parents!

Studying and living abroad will also help you to stand out from other candidates in an increasingly crowded job market. You'll gain first-hand international experience, improve your language skills and be able to draw upon your time in the UK to demonstrate skills in adaptability, self-confidence and problem solving - all of which employers value.

The more independent approach to learning that you'll find here will also help you to develop critical thinking, self-discipline and the analytical skills that are sought after by employers.

Aurélie G, from France, spent a year in Dundee on the Erasmus scheme. After completing her degree, she worked as a redactor for the Ministry of Homeland Security, in the International and European Affairs Office and then as a redactor for the Ministry of Defence. Since 2009, she has been a PhD. student in the Centre de Documentation et de Recherches Européennes (CDRE) in Bayonne.

Aurélie says: "As a French student, passing a year, only using English, is a great advantage. It opened up some very interesting professional opportunities. Also, the fact that I studied Politics from a foreign point of view opened my mind and gave me a broader way of understanding issues that I was confronted with, both academically and professionally."
