The programmes in Town & Regional Planning offer an exciting portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate and distance-learning opportunities. Importantly, our courses are informed by the research undertaken by members of staff at The Geddes Institute within the School of Social Sciences. This positive environment of theoretically informed and applied research, critical reflection, active dissemination, and learning means that students are at the forefront of cutting-edge developments in spatial policy and environmental planning. Further, students are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary learning, through a range of joint degrees, in addition to the accredited professional degrees.
The staff are committed to the highest teaching standards and Town and Regional Planning holds the highest Teaching Quality Assessment rating for the discipline in Scotland. The majority of teaching staff are members of the Higher Education Academy, as well as members of the relevant professional bodies for its degree programmes. Graduates hold a range of senior positions within central and local government, executive agencies, partnerships, and the private development and consultancy sectors.
The Environmental Management programme addresses the manner in which environmental change interacts with human activities. In applying the principles and practices of environmental decision making, students develop specific skills including the identification, definition and analysis of environmental issues; the formulation of policies; and an ability to select the appropriate methods of implementation and assessment.
The programme includes a number of field visits across the different years of the degree. In recent years Level 3 students have visited Belgium, Holland and Poland, as part of the European Spatial Planning module.
