The University of Dundee is now recognised as one of Scotland's leading universities with a powerful research reputation, particularly in the medical and life sciences. It is a professional university to pursue a professional education. Founded in 1881 as University College, Dundee was, for many years, a part of the University of St Andrews, becoming an independent university in its own right in 1967. Three mergers have helped to bring the full-time undergraduate population to over 9,000 and changed the institution dramatically, extending the range of activities to include art and design, nursing and teacher education as well as the full range of academic disciplines.
We offer a unique and challenging education mixed with a broad range of extra-curricular activities and clubs. From the classroom to the dance floor we've got something that'll suit your taste. Our slogan is Serious Fun and we intend to live up to it.
We make a special effort to ensure our visitng students are comfortable and cared for, including help with the enrolment process and a special orientation in the first week.
The International Office exists to make sure our overseas students have all the information and advice needed to make their time at Dundee University successful and enjoyable. Here we answer all questions about the University's facilities and courses, entry qualifications, admissions procedures, fee status and tuition fees. The International Office is your key contact during the application process, from your very first question to your arrival at the airport. We also provide advice and support to students who need to obtain a visa before they travel. Our aim is to make your application process smooth and successful.
The Student Advisory Service (SAS), takes over from the International Office after you've arrived on campus. They are your first point of contact once you've matriculated. They work quickly to fix and solve any problems you may have during your time at Dundee. They can act on your behalf in your dealings with departments or support services within the University or in dealings with external organisations such as immigration officials or local council services.
It's the long pub-crawl, just down your road. It's discovery central, just beyond your nose. It's a lot of noise from a very small place. It's everything from Antarctic ships to tropical gardens. It's Dundee, a big deal for a small city. It encompasses a long history and an exciting future, a cosmopolitan outlook and very reasonable prices. Here comes the tour. Keep up...
Dundee is called the City of Discovery not just because of us (we like to think) but because there is simply so much to discover. Like Scott of the Antarctic's ship - The Discovery, or the early 19th Century warship - The Unicorn. Or there's the city's industrial development at West Hendersons Wynd where you can see how Dundee folk lived and worked over a hundred years ago. Go on, have a look. You can see it all from the Dundee Law, the 570 feet volcanic plug that gives you fantastic views.
After you have climbed that hill you will probably be hungry. Dundee boasts an unavoidable array of good and affordable restaurants, eateries and pubs. Some of them are open all night, like Clarke's 24-hour bakery. What you might be doing out-and-about so late, we won't ask. But we can have plenty of guesses - Mardi Gras on South Ward Road, reputedly Scotland's best commercial nightclub. Further up the street is Enigma. New on the scene is Afterdark, which sounds like it's going to be big. But let's go shopping first.
Overgate Shopping Centre is brand new, glamorous, glitzy and a paradise for shopping junkies with more than the usual student budget. But Dundee is ring-fenced by Tesco's supermarket, cheap record shops and everything else you need to survive at affordable prices. Many shops have student discounts too, which might just save you enough to afford some culture.
Within five minutes walk of the campus are Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre on Nethergate, which shows art films, Dundee Rep on Tay Square with contemporary and traditional plays and its own dance company, and the Whitehall Theatre for musicals, comedy and amateur shows.
The fact is that Dundee is so easily entertaining, friendly and accessible that many students don't leave, even after they have graduated. They never get away. But if you can escape, there's plenty to see and do. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are an hour away by train. Dundee is right in the heart of one of the most famous river fishing and golf playing areas of the world. The Cairngorms are beautiful mountains and perfect for trekking, pony riding, canoeing and even snowboarding.
DUSA - The Dundee University Students' Association has a number of bars and activities available for students. First port of call is Air Bar, a traditional pub with a brilliant selection of beers. Sit down and enjoy the banter or prove you could be the next Pop Idol on Karaoke night.
If you're into music, Floor Five is the venue. Theme nights include blues, soul, hard rock, the 80s and much, much more. So whatever your taste, a musical feast awaits. On to the Liar Bar, where the young and trendy ‘footloose and fancy free' crowd hang out. Now things are really buzzing. Just look at all that talent! The Liar Bar is the main feeder bar for Mono - the hottest student nightclub in Scotland. Huge dance floor, raised balconies, video screens, funky light sets - it's got it all. Just soak up the authentic club atmosphere!
Pubbing and clubbing is great, but it's not the only way to get your kicks on campus. There's a games room with pool and arcade games. The same building is home to Yum Yum where you can buy snacks and soft drinks. DUSA is run by students for students and offers a huge range of services and entertainment.
DUSA is the top union in Scotland for leisure and pleasure! The University is well known for its wide diversity of clubs and societies. Music, biology, politics, the environment, travel, history, theatre… whatever your interests, you'll find like-minded people with whom to share your thoughts and ideas. Most societies have their own, very active, social scene with nights out, trips and get-togethers of every description.
From the day you arrive, you'll be made to feel welcome and encouraged to ‘join the party'. All kinds of activities are on offer and it's all designed to get you involved and help you make friends. Here at Dundee University, boredom is just never an option. Enjoy!
Whether your sporting interests are recreational or seriously competitive, there's something for everyone, and at every level. We have the most modern and extensive indoor facilities of any Scottish university, which includes two versatile sports halls, squash courts, a physical conditioning suite, a sauna (for the really strenuous) and a four-lane swimming pool. Outside we have a 33-acre sports ground with floodlit training areas and tennis courts.
We also have some fantastic natural sporting facilities. We are right in the heart of the perfect place for canoeing, skiing, rambling and climbing. As we are on the River Tay, you can expect some excellent sailing.
Altogether there are 40 sports on offer. So go and explore and make the most of all the best equipment, facilities and coaching advice you will probably ever have. Not to mention the great social scene that comes with it.
