Overview

Spirituality can be highly relevant in the palliative care setting and this module aims to examine how you as well as patients and carers / family acknowledge and value spirituality. You will also be encouraged to reflect on your own spirituality to help in analysing this concept within the palliative care environment.

Spirituality is seen as distinct from religion and this distinction is sensitively identified and explored within the module. The relevance of value systems in society is considered, and how these are manifested in systems of faith and worship.

Aims of the Module

To examine within the palliative setting how students and the patient and their carers / family acknowledge and value spirituality. Students are encouraged to develop an awareness of their own spirituality in order to analyse this concept.

Assessment

The module assessment is practice focused and aims to facilitate the development of professional practice. Students are encouraged to engage with self-assessment activities throughout the learning experience. Formative assessment enables students to develop practice and academic process skills through tutor feed-back.

Student Support

A text-based study guide is used to support learning for this module. The study guide helps the student make essential links between theory and practice and prepare for the module assessment. A dynamic tutorial support system operates with a tutor link to the module. Students are encouraged to use the tutorial system according to their need.

Accreditation

This module is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialling Centre (ANCC).

Entry Requirements

First level registered nurses in the UK or overseas equivalent for BN and BNPC. For MPC - students require to have a health-related first degree.
