Overview

This module allows the student to explore a range of issues that relate to the management of aggressive behaviour. The student is encouraged to analyse factors such as arousal, escalation and de-escalation of aggression and explore the context of how and why aggression / violence occurs.

Aims of the Module

To prepare nurses to cope with aggressive behaviour exhibited by clients in a range of clinical settings within community and hospital practice.

Module Content

This module consists of five units and is appropriate for nurses working in both general and mental health areas of nursing. It is suitable for either hospital or community based nursing care. The content examines the application of theories of aggression to practice and covers topics such as the concept of arousal, assessing arousal level, non-escalation and de-escalation management and professional and legal issues in the management of aggression.

The module does not cover restraining techniques.

Assessment

The module assessment is practice focused and aims to facilitate the development of professional practice. Students are encouraged to engage with self-assessment activities throughout the learning experience. Formative assessment enables students to develop practice and academic process skills through tutor feed-back.

Student Support

A text-based study guide is used to support learning for this module. The study guide helps the student make essential links between theory and practice and prepare for the module assessment. A dynamic tutorial support system operates with a tutor link to the module. Students are encouraged to use the tutorial system according to their need.

Accreditation

This module is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialling Centre (ANCC).

Entry Requirements

First level registered nurses in the UK or overseas equivalent for BN and BNPC.
