Biography

Anne joined the School as a Senior Lecturer in January 2010 from the School of Management at the University of St. Andrews where she was a lecturer in Management and Director of the Honours Programme. She began her academic career in 1990 lecturing at Blackburn College and the Manchester School of Management. From 1992 to 1995, Anne was a Teaching Fellow in Human Resource Management at Manchester School of Management, UMIST and from 1995 to 2002, she lectured in Organisational Behaviour at Leeds University Business School.

Teaching

Anne has taught a range of issues from a Critical Perspective on Managing People in the Workplace. These include: Inequality around Gender, Race and Ethnicity; Organisational Misbehaviour, and Issues of Power and Control. Other teaching has included: Critical Perspectives on Human Resource Management (HRM), and Planning and Managing Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dissertations. Teaching currently being developed includes Ethical and Human Rights Issues in HRM: Macro and Micro Contexts.

Research

Anne's research interest is in the field of Organisational Sociology. Her initial focus was on the nature of work and the experience and process of being managed primarily within occupations traditionally regarded as unskilled (e.g. Clerical work and non-professional care work). This interest has evolved over the years to encompass the inter-related areas of commitment, gender, race and ethnicity, the social construction of skill and knowledge, identity and the concepts of structure and agency. Although she has used mixed methodology research techniques, she favours qualitative, interpretivist methodology drawing on both participant and non-participant observation and in-depth interviewing.
