Iain Wright graduated MA(Hons) in Geography from the University of Dundee in 1973 and completed a part time M.Phil in 1978. Whilst studying at the University he was Secretary of the Students' Association and Chairman of the Student Publications Board. Iain was elected in 2007 to the University Court as one of the two Assessors of the Graduates Council. He is a member of the Finance, and Governance and Nominations committees.

After graduating he worked in Planning and IT for Ford Motor Company, Tayside Health Board, Wessex Regional Health Authority and Burmah Oil. For the past 21 years he worked for Zurich Financial Services based at their UK Offices in Wiltshire. He was latterly their E-Business Manager for the UK Life Division of Zurich as well as being a Director of Zurich Computer Services Ltd and an Internet start up subsidiary. For many years he was actively involved in recruiting and training Industrial Placement Students in IT during their outplacement year from a number of Universities.

Since retiring, he has pursued his long standing interest in Cartography and has been sponsored by the Ordnance Survey to undertake research into the use of Digital Terrain Models to derive routing information for path and road users showing where steep gradients are. This included producing demonstration data for satnav systems showing routes that HGV lorries should avoid. He received an M.Sc (by research) from Aberdeen University in 2009 and won a number of awards for his work.

He is married to Kathleen and has two daughters. He lives in Aberdeenshire.
