Our programmes in writing for academic purposes offer:
We have two programmes which support students in developing their writing. These are the RLF Writing Support Programme and Writing by Appointment' (see paragraphs below). Each offers one-to-one tuition in academic writing. For group teaching, we arrange ad hoc inputs to modular programmes on request and subject to staff availability. We can show you how to improve the grammar, style, punctuation and spelling in your writing and especially help you with learning how to avoid plagiarism in your work. However, we need your assistance in order to provide you with suppport.
The RLF Brochure will give you more information.
For more than five years the Royal Literary Fund (RLF) has invited the University to host Writing Fellows to work with our undergraduate and postgraduate students in developing their writing style through confidential tutorials. Writing Fellows also offer advice to staff on ways of developing their writing style for publication. Appointments are available from Dr Bashabi Fraser (Mondays and Thursdays), and Geoff Barker (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). This programmes is available in semester time only.
If you miss an appointment with one of the RLF Writing Fellows, then you will have deprived someone else of an appointment. Please be considerate so that the Writing Fellows are not left with empty appointments. If you cannot attend for your scheduled appointment, then please inform the Booking Secretary (01382-384308) giving as much notice as possible.
This programme of academic skills support (see leaflet) for academic writing is available in semester time. Our writing tutors provide individual tutorials lasting up to 55 minutes. We operate an appointment system to fit in with your timetable - and it's free. Demand is high and normally there is a limit of 5 appointments per semester. Missed appointments are included in this maximum. Exceptionally, additional appointments may be provided.
Our writing tutors on Writing by Appointment are especially experienced in providing this kind of assistance. Generally, you can meet with a tutor for one-hour appointments. Just one request: our tutors are commissioned for each tutorial which means that when a student misses an appointment without informing us or advises us at very short notice of inability to attend, this both inconveniences the tutor and incurs a cost to the Academic Achievement Teaching Unit that might have bought another student an appointment. If you do book an appointment, then please ensure that you keep it. If unexpectedly, you cannot attend, then please inform the Booking Secretary (01382 384308).
To arrange an appointment, please email writing@dundee.ac.uk or book online
N.B. Bookings can be accepted during semester time only.
Writing by Appointment is our 'in-house' writing support programme and students can self-refer or, with the students' consent, be referred by a member of staff. However, not all staff will be aware of the names of the authorship of work they mark. Consequently, we have devised pre-printed stickers that can be attached to students' work so that the marker can recommend that they approach AATU for assistance with their writing. For a supply of stickers, please contact aatu@dundee.ac.uk
