University reading skills

What are these?

As a student, you may find that you are required to read much, much more than you had to do at school or college. University students are expected to generate their own reading from initial 'cues' provided within Reading Lists and other recommendations or materials recommended by teaching staff; and, of course, they are required to make and read their own notes. Adopting strategies so that you read quickly with understanding is imperative to your ability to read productively and not simply read material without really absorbing its content.

How we can help

The Academic Achievement Teaching Unit tutors can help you to:

• understand how text is constructed and thereby help you to read more effectively;
• read for speed and meaning; and
• use this understanding to help you make notes from printed source material that are succinct and not simply a 'copy' of the original text
