At university you will find that you will have speak in a number of situations - to express your ideas in seminars and tutorials, in formal group presentations or debates, and also informal discussions with friends. These activities do not need to be stressful, but they do need a level of competence that may require a bit of work on your part. If you are well-prepared and have made yourself aware of some of the 'tricks' of presenting your ideas orally, then your confidence will grow. However, for some students, such activities are stressful - not necessarily because they cannot do what is required, but simply because they may lack the experience to do themselves justice in these situations.
Our Academic Achievement Teaching Unit (AATU) tutors have a wide range of expertise in helping students to develop their speaking skills but please note our expectations. They can help with a range of aspects including developing clarity of diction, voice projection and using PowerPoint as a presentation tool. If appropriate, we can arrange a practice presentation with a video facility so that you can see - and hear - yourself in action. We would follow this up with a de-briefing session.
If speaking in front of others is part of your professional practice, then you may wish to work with one of the Academic Achievement Teaching Unit staff tutors on voice projection, diction and speaking to specific audiences. For example, students following teacher education courses may find this useful.
If you would like to receive some guidance in any aspect of presenting your ideas orally, then please contact: aatu@dundee.ac.uk
If you feel that it would be helpful to a student to receive some help with the oral aspects of academic communication (including classroom delivery for students of education), then please ask the student to contact: aatu@dundee.ac.uk
