Numerical and Maths Skills

What is it?

Some courses need a level of ability to handle number and sometimes students find that their knowledge on some of the numerical or mathematical aspects of their courses is weak or a bit rusty.

How we can help

We run a programme called 'Count Me In' that gives one-to-one or small group tutorials to students who would like to brush up their maths. No question is too simple to be asked because often all that is needed is a memory jog and a little time working through some examples with someone on hand to answer your questions. Count Me In tutors are able to give you this help in a relaxed environment with no pressure.

Appointments can be for 15 minutes or anything up to one hour - however long it takes for you to grasp how to do deal with the numerical or mathematical difficulty you've encountered. You can arrange an appointment for you individually or for a small group of friends by emailing:countmein@dundee.ac.uk or book online. Follow-up appointments are possible so if you come across something else that is proving sticky, then call again for another appointment. Check out our expectations of you before making an appointment.

Information for staff

For many students, handling number or manipulating mathematical formulae is a really difficult activity. It may be that the course you are teaching requires a certain assumed level of mathematical and numerical competence. Usually class or tutorial time will not be sufficient for teaching staff to revisit the fundamentals and so some of your students may struggle - not because they are not competent, but perhaps because the presentation is different from what they are accustomed to or they may simply be a bit rusty. They may feel too embarrassed to ask apparently simple questions in class contexts.

Therefore, Count Me In is provided as an additional support, not as a full-blown course in number and mathematics; it is a source of ad hoc help in a confidential setting that allows students to revisit or relearn a process that they will probably have covered at school or college but have simply forgotten. For other students, the problems may arise from current material and they may just need some extra time and a helping hand to acquire some further practice. Whatever the circumstances, the Count Me In tutors will seek to support students wherever possible by providing confidential help. Students can refer themselves or can be referred by staff. If you would like to refer a student then email: countmein@dundee.ac.uk. Similarly, for further information or for a supply of 'Count Me In' fliers for distribution in class, then please use the aforementioned email.
