Grammar Skills

What are these?

Grammar is an integral aspect of effective academic writing and is a general term that describes the way that language is organised. Thus, developing a deeper understanding of how individual words and groups of words form the coherent sentences and paragraphs that construct academic text will be helpful to you. Establishing some of the grammatical rules and conventions will help you to write, spell and punctuate to the standard required at university. The logic of grammar - learning the role of different types of words as well as what individual words mean and how to use them has the potential to be a fascinating journey for you as you develop your skills as an academic author.

How we can help

The Academic Achievement Teaching Unit has tutors who can explain some of the fundamentals of grammar in one-to-one tutorials or in in-course workshops provided through your school. If you simply feel that your grammatical knowledge is a bit rusty, then you could visit www.dundee.ac.uk/advancedundee/ and look on the A-Z menu on the home page for terms such as

If you've received feedback on coursework suggesting that you need to work on improving your grammar, then you can make an appointment to meet with an academic skills tutor by emailing: writing@dundee.ac.uk to learn more about the correct use of language for your university courses but please note our expectations.

Information for staff

If you have concerns about aspects of your students' writing, especially in relation to accuracy of grammatical structures, punctuation, spelling and style, then we suggest that you recommend students to make an appointment to work on difficulties with an Academic Achievement Teaching Unit academic skills tutor. Stickers supporting this recommendation are available for staff to put on students' course work submissions. For stickers or to make a referral email: writing@dundee.ac.uk or phone: extension 84308.
